COMBATE Project

Skandiaverken tests hydrogen and ammonia tri-fuel engines on laboratory using custom PFI systems and ECU control in combination with exhaust after treatment to minimize pollutant emissions.
Skandiaverken is a member of the COMBATE consortium, a research project focused on developing more efficient and cost-effective sustainable fuels for maritime transport. Through laboratory testing and combustion simulations, Skandiaverken will investigate how alternative fuels can be used in marine engines.

The project
COMBATE aims to support maritime decarbonisation by addressing the technical and economic challenges associated with sustainable fuels. The project covers the fuel value chain, from green hydrogen production and CO₂ capture to fuel synthesis and engine validation.
Its research explores hydrogen, green ammonia and dimethyl ether (DME), with the aim of reducing production costs, improving energy efficiency and supporting their future use in the maritime sector.

Skandiaverken’s role in the COMBATE project
Skandiaverken will investigate the application of a dual-fuel gas cycle consisting of a mixture of hydrogen (H₂) and ammonia (NH₃) in a laboratory engine by injecting these low-reactivity gases into the intake port, while diesel fuel will be directly injected into the cylinder to act as a combustion initiator. To this end, specific injectors for H₂ and NH₃, together with a programmable electronic control unit (ECU), will be installed to determine the optimal injection parameters for the three fuels.
The combustion characteristics of the H₂-NH₃ mixture will be analyzed, as well as the mixture ratios that provide optimal combustion performance in terms of emissions and engine efficiency.
In addition, laboratory evaluations will be carried out using H₂ derived from biogas for application in dual-fuel operation, and combustion simulations will be performed to assess the use of dimethyl ether (DME) in medium-speed marine engines.

The COMBATE consortium
The project is coordinated by Empresarios Agrupados–GHESA (EAG) and brings together six companies: EAG, Iberdrola, Sistem, Skandiaverken (SKV), H2Site and H2B2. Together, the partners contribute expertise in engineering, hydrogen production and purification, digitalisation, control systems and marine engine validation.
