h2o PROJECTs

As part of this vision, we participate in H2OCEAN, a strategic R&D project focused on developing the next generation of sustainable vessels powered by hydrogen technologies.

H2OCEAN aims to position the Basque maritime industry as a national and international benchmark in the development of hydrogen-based sustainable vessels. The project explores emerging technologies to make this vision a reality — from propulsion systems to smart digital tools.

Key Research Areas

The project is structured into several work packages, each addressing a fundamental aspect of sustainable vessel design and operation:

Technical Framework and Technology Watch
Defining system requirements and monitoring advances in hydrogen and maritime technologies.

Green Propulsion and Power Systems
Developing propulsion and auxiliary energy systems based on hydrogen technology.

Sustainable Vessel Design and Materials
Studying materials’ behavior in contact with hydrogen, assessing life-cycle impacts, and improving shipbuilding efficiency and recyclability.

Operations and Maintenance Innovation
Applying AI and digital twin technologies to optimize vessel performance, safety, and maintenance.

Validation and Testing
Prototyping and validating new technologies in real industrial environments.

Dissemination and Impact
Sharing project outcomes to promote knowledge and adoption across the maritime ecosystem.

H2OCEAN brings together leading companies, technology centers, and research institutions of the Basque Country to create an integrated hydrogen maritime ecosystem.

The project is part of the Hazitek Program, and is co-funded by the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development and Infrastructure and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
