h2o PROJECTs

As part of this vision, we participate in H2OCEAN; this project seeks to research less mature technologies that allow the industries of the Basque Country to be positioned as a national and international benchmark regarding the sustainable vessel of the future based fundamentally on hydrogen technology.

The fuel of the future for shipping must produce zero emissions at the same time as being able to power the vessels around the world, be storable and transportable, and, of course, be financially viable. The green hydrogen appears an opportunity in this context. Green hydrogen is going to play a key role in the process to decarbonise the economy that is known as the energy transition. It is an inexhaustible source of clean and sustainable energy, which can be used to power different industries, and which above all, will allow the planet to be decarbonised.

A consortium of Basque leading companies formed by H2SITE, Ingeteam, Guascor Energy, Oliver Design, Pine, Wärtsila, Sener and Skandiaverken have carried out different works in the area of hydrogen application in maritime applications in collaboration with the main research institutes of the Basque Country (Tecnalia and the University of Basque Country).

As outcome of the project, we have developed a dual fuel hydrogen engine that has been tested in laboratory, carrying out industrial research in the different aspects of hydrogen burning and application in maritime environment. A diesel engine has been modified with a common rail diesel injection system in combination of a hydrogen port fuel injection system and a specific ECU capable of managing both diesel and hydrogen injection separately.

The engine performance has been evaluated and optimized with focus on emissions and efficiency in order to minimize the greenhouse gas emissions.

The Project has been financed by the Department of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Government (HAZITEK program) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
